Wanda Holloway recorded her mother reminiscing about her grandfather, Ransom Hunter piquing an interest in researching the Hunter family.
She began interviewing family members that remembered information about Ransom Hunter’s life and his family.
Wanda began using online genealogical websites to dig deeper into Ransom Hunter’s life.
2013
Wanda sent a records request to the NC Department of Archives and History for additional information on Ransom Hunter and received his marriage licenses, which motivated Wanda to find more documentation of his life and work.
After finding various documents like marriage and death certificates, and proof of military service, Wanda was astounded to find over 30 public records indicating Ransom Hunter had owned property, and sold to and invested with some of the leading men of the area.
A continued search lead Wanda to find mentions of Ransom Hunter in historic newspaper articles and historical non-fiction.
2014
Wanda presented her findings on Ransom Hunter to the family at a family reunion
2015
Mount Holly Historical Society Museum featured an exhibit on Ransom Hunter.
The Hunter family met with the Mt. Holly Planning Commission to discuss having the former land on which Ransom Hunter lived turned into a namesake park for the community.
Ransom Hunter was featured in A T & T’s Heritage Calendar which celebrates North Carolina’s African-American experience.
2021
Wanda Holloway, family member Eric Wilson and Theresa Green, formerly of the Mt. Holly Historical Society met with the Mount Holly Parks and Recreation Commission to follow up on their request for a park. The Hunter family is currently waiting for an approval or rejection of their request.
